Do these pants make my butt look flat?

baggy pantsDo you look as good going as you did coming? Most of us check our faces in the mirror before heading out, but few think to look at our backsides. And let’s be frank: there are worse things than tight pants on a big J-Lo butt. I’m talking about droopy drawers on a flat butt.

Even if your butt isn’t really flat, droopy drawers can happen even to skinny folks whose butt is smaller than than the manufacturer’s standard, or as a side effect of needing to buy a larger size to accommodate a wider middle age waist. In either case you can button the waist, but now you’ve got a baggy butt.

I recommend doing a butt-check on all your jeans and slacks at one time. Pile them up on the bed and try them on a pair at a time. Stand with your back to a full-length mirror in good light, and view your backside in a hand held mirror.

1. Alter the pants, if you really like them. This involves, at the least, detaching the waistband in the back and pulling the rear fabric higher before stitching the waistband back. You will probably also have to take in the side seams on your hips. If you haven’t the skills and sewing machine to do it yourself, find a tailor or alterations shop.

2. Give the pants to Goodwill and buy some that fit better. Spandex helps. Never buy pants you can’t check first in a rear-view mirror.

3. Consider wearing skirts instead. Maybe with tights. Or palazzo pants with wide legs from the hip down.
